Last week saw the final of the Division One Cup and the division one play off.

In the Cup Final Baldock Reserves set out for a possible chance of a league and cup double. They started on top against a spirited Fairland’s side and hit the crossbar with a long-range effort from James Smith within the first couple of minutes. It was not long before Baldcok reserves took the lead when Lee Buck got behind the defence and had an easy tap in. Fairland’s despite being under pressure were denied an equaliser when the Baldock keeper pushed away a shot with minutes remaining in the first half. An action packed second half started with a penalty for handball against a Fairland’s player. Fairland’s Kevin Poolman saved Adam Shelly’s penalty. Baldock was still on top and were awarded another penalty when Kevin Liggett brought down a Baldock forward. Cameron Brawley stepped up this time for the penalty but once again an excellent save from Kevin Poolman saved the day. Baldock pressure eventually paid of when Michael Masters found himself in the penalty area alone and calmly smashed the ball into the bottom corner. Shortly afterwards Paul Martin found himself 25 yards out and hit a powerful shot into the bottom corner to make the game save for Baldock Reserves. It was still Baldock pressure and only the excellent performance from Fairland’s Kevin Poolman prevented a far heavier defeat.

Saturdays Division One playoff was a close affair between Magnum and Baldock Reserves played at Whitwell Village. Both defences were on top for long spells, which meant the game went into extra time with the score at 0-0. The deadlock was finally broken when Peter Morrison scored with an excellent free kick to put Magnum in front. Baldock were feeling the effects of their Cup final played 48 hours earlier. Magnum was now on top and a brace of goals from Alim Uddin completed the scoring to give them the title.

Magnum now has another chance of glory when they take on Premier Division side Whitwell Village in the Benevolent Shield on Thursday at Hitchin Town FC kick off 7.30pm.
